THE BOXING ALBUM

Walker was hugely popular with the American public and media during his heyday. Not only was he a ferocious and fearless fighter who was prepared to take on anybody, but he was also a flamboyant character who provided the press with a succession of juicy stories. He was an inveterate womanizer and he often liked to drink until dawn. He married seven times, including three remarriages, and his extravagant lifestyle was a considerable burden on his finances. However his manager was the wily Jack "Doc" Kearns who amassed him a considerable fortune over their years together.
When he retired in 1935, the "Toy Bulldog" took up the more passive art of painting, adopting a 'primitive' style. His canvases were widely acclaimed and he had several important exhibitions. More predictably, he also owned a popular bar sited, fittingly enough, next to Madison Square Garden in New York, the scene of many of his greatest triumphs.
